Protests Erupt in Tokyo Over Japanese Leader’s Taiwan Remarks 🇯🇵✊

Hundreds rallied in Tokyo yesterday demanding the resignation of Japanese leader Sanae Takaichi after her controversial comments about the Taiwan region sparked diplomatic tensions. Protesters gathered outside the Prime Minister's Office chanting "Retract your remarks!" and "Takaichi must step down!" 🗣️🔥

The uproar follows Takaichi's claim during a November 2025 Diet meeting that Japan could exercise military options if the Chinese mainland took action in the Taiwan Strait – remarks critics call "reckless saber-rattling" unsuited for a leader. Former PM Shigeru Ishiba slammed the comments as dangerously blurring lines between Taiwan contingencies and Japanese security during a TBS radio interview this week.

📢 Why it matters: Japan's official stance has historically avoided explicit military commitments on the Taiwan question. Takaichi's break from this tradition has drawn fire from lawmakers and media alike, with China repeatedly condemning the remarks as interference in internal affairs.
