China Reaffirms One-China Principle as Key to Taiwan’s WTO Role 🌍

China's Foreign Ministry doubled down on its stance this week, declaring the one-China principle non-negotiable for Taiwan's participation in global trade bodies. The statement comes amid fresh tensions over how Taiwan is represented at international events in 2026.

Diplomatic Sparks Fly

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed reporters Tuesday after Taiwan's DPP authorities skipped a high-level WTO meeting in Cameroon. The move followed visa documents listing Taiwan as a province of China – a recurring flashpoint in cross-strait relations.

"The DPP’s political manipulation is despicable," Lin stated, accusing Taiwan’s leadership of "seeking independence through disgraceful means."

Why This Matters Now

With protectionism rising globally, China positions itself as a defender of multilateral trade systems. This year’s WTO meeting in Cameroon – the first African host in a decade – has become a stage for both economic diplomacy and geopolitical posturing.

Lin emphasized: "There’s only one China. How Taiwan participates in international organizations must align with this fundamental truth."
