Heads up, everyone! 🚨 There is some critical health news coming out of the African continent. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has just called an urgent regional meeting to battle a new Ebola virus disease outbreak that has surfaced in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
What's happening in the DRC?
The outbreak is centered in the Ituri province. According to preliminary tests from the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in Kinshasa, 13 out of 20 samples tested positive for the virus. While they are still sequencing the genes to be 100% sure, initial findings suggest this might be a non-Zaire strain of the virus. 🧬
The numbers are concerning: Africa CDC reports approximately 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths, though the DRC's health ministry suggests the death toll could be as high as 80, including suspected community deaths. Response teams are already on the ground to manage the crisis.
The situation in Uganda
Across the border, Uganda's Ministry of Health confirmed an imported case. A 59-year-old man from the DRC was admitted to Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Kampala on May 11 and sadly passed away on May 14. Tests confirmed this was the Bundibugyo strain. The good news? Ugandan authorities state there is no confirmed local transmission yet, and they've ramped up screening at the western border to keep the virus from spreading further. 🛡️
Why is this happening now?
The Africa CDC warned that several factors are making this situation risky:
- High population movement across borders.
- Mobility related to mining activities.
- General insecurity in the affected areas.
Jean Kaseya, the Director General of Africa CDC, emphasized that the moment calls for "speed, scientific rigour and regional solidarity." The emergency meeting between the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan focused on the essentials: contact tracing, lab support, safe burials, and public awareness campaigns to keep people safe. 💬✨
The Big Picture
This is unfortunately the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC since the virus was first found in 1976. It's a tough cycle, especially considering the previous outbreak only just ended in December 2025. The region is working hard to break the chain and protect the community. Stay tuned for more updates! 🌍💪
