Justice Interrupted: Rwandan Genocide Suspect Felicien Kabuga Dies at 93 🕊️

A High-Profile Case Comes to an End

The legal saga of one of the most notorious figures linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide has finally reached its end. Felicien Kabuga, a former businessman and media executive, has passed away in custody in The Hague at the age of 93.

According to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), Kabuga died in the hospital this past Saturday. He had been awaiting transfer to another country after his trial was suspended.

Who was Felicien Kabuga? 🔍

For those who might not know the history, Kabuga wasn't just a businessman; prosecutors accused him of being a central financier for the horrific mass killings in Rwanda. Over a period of just 100 days in 1994, more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus lost their lives.

He was allegedly the mastermind behind the scenes, providing the money and the means—including distributing the machetes used in the attacks. He also backed the Radio-Television Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM), a broadcaster that aired dangerous hate speech and propaganda to fuel the violence. 📻🚫

The Great Escape and Final Years 🏃‍♂️💨

Kabuga spent over two decades as a fugitive, hiding from international authorities. The manhunt finally ended in 2020 when he was arrested near Paris using fake identity documents. It was one of the longest international manhunts in history.

However, the wheels of justice turned slowly. By 2023, judges ruled that Kabuga was no longer fit to stand trial due to advanced dementia and failing health. While the legal proceedings were halted, he remained in detention because no country had agreed to receive him.

While Kabuga pleaded not guilty to all charges throughout his legal battle, the IRMCT has ordered an inquiry into the circumstances of his death. Although the trial didn't reach a final verdict, the story remains a stark reminder of the importance of human rights and global accountability. 🌍✨
