Ten years after China’s Grand Canal earned UNESCO World Heritage status, a jaw-dropping tribute is taking shape in Fujian Province! Meet Zheng Chunhui, a master of Putian wood carving (a national intangible cultural heritage!), who’s leading a team to create a 500-year-old-camphor-wood masterpiece celebrating the canal’s legacy.
The project – started in April 2023 – uses nine ancient camphor trees to carve scenes of bustling waterways, historic cities, and cultural landmarks along the 1,800-km canal. Imagine: intricate boats, lively markets, and landscapes frozen in wood!
This isn’t just art – it’s a time machine connecting modern creators with centuries of history. “We want to show how the canal shaped China’s culture and economy,” says Zheng. The team will work for five years to finish what might become Fujian’s next viral attraction.
Stay tuned – we’ll keep you updated as this wooden wonder unfolds!
