China Pledges Bold Climate Action for Ozone Protection 🌍✨

China Doubles Down on Ozone Layer Protection

On World Ozone Day 2024, China announced ambitious plans to strengthen its role in global climate efforts, vowing to tackle ozone-depleting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and ramp up international cooperation. 🌱 The Ministry of Ecology and Environment pledged to build a ‘comprehensive HFC lifecycle management system’, aligning with the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment – key global treaties fighting climate change.

Since signing the Montreal Protocol in 1987, over 99% of ozone-damaging chemicals have been phased out worldwide. China highlighted its progress, from shutting down outdated industrial facilities to promoting green cooling technologies. ❄️ Experts call this a ‘win-win’ for both ozone recovery and reducing global warming.

Why it matters: HFCs, widely used in air conditioners and refrigerators, are thousands of times more potent than CO₂. China’s push for alternatives could accelerate climate goals while supporting green industries. The announcement also signals stronger collaboration with developing countries via funding and tech transfers. 🤝
