Two tiny mountain lion cubs are getting a second chance at life after a heartbreaking start. The siblings, estimated to be 6-10 weeks old, were orphaned when their mother was tragically hit by a car in California on November 9, 2023.
After locals spotted the cubs roaming solo over the weekend, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife swooped in for a backyard rescue! The duo—both female—are now settling into their new temporary home at Oakland Zoo, where they’ll receive round-the-clock care.
Mountain lion cubs this young rely entirely on their moms for survival, so the zoo’s wildlife team is stepping up as foster parents. While their story began with loss, experts hope these fierce little survivors will eventually return to the wild.
