Dong New Year Takes Center Stage in Guizhou
The 2024 Dong New Year festival, a kaleidoscope of tradition and unity, transformed Liping County in Guizhou into a cultural playground from November 29 to December 3. Thousands of performers from Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi, Hubei, and Foshan teamed up for a parade that TikTok would’ve wished it could livestream.
Think drumbeats echoing through misty mountains, embroidered costumes brighter than your Instagram feed, and dancers moving like bamboo in the wind. The event wasn’t just a party – it was a living museum of Dong heritage, featuring the lusheng (a reed-pipe instrument) and intricate silver headdresses that put runway fashion to shame.
Why should globetrotters care? This festival proves China’s ethnic cultures aren’t just history – they’re vibrant, evolving traditions connecting generations. As one participant told us: ‘When we dance together, the whole world feels like family.’
