Over 30 international martial artists from 10 countries recently put their skills to the test at the 13th Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Competition in China. The event’s Duanwei grading system – think of it as a real-life martial arts ‘leveling up’ challenge – drew athletes passionate about proving their mastery of this ancient practice.
To earn elementary recognition, participants needed at least three years of rigorous training. But the real came at advanced levels: Candidates were evaluated on their understanding of wushu philosophy, technical precision, and their contributions to promoting the art globally.
‘This isn’t just about kicks and punches,’ one participant told CGTN’s Sergey Gordeev. ‘It’s about carrying forward a 1,500-year-old legacy.’ From France to Argentina, competitors showcased how Shaolin culture bridges continents – proving that martial arts truly speak a universal language.
