Move over, ‘Hunger Games’—these elephants are winning at snack time! A lively herd of wild Asian elephants was recently spotted munching on corn cobs and taking a dip in rivers in Pu’er City, Yunnan Province, showcasing their quirky routines and conservation success.
Footage captured by wildlife monitors reveals the elephants’ daily grind: afternoon foraging sessions ( corn is clearly their go-to snack), river swims to beat the heat, and late-night forest hangouts. ‘They’re creatures of habit,’ says Asian Elephant monitor Ma Wenhong. ‘But watching them never gets old.’
These gentle giants aren’t just adorable—they’re ecological superheroes. With pregnancies lasting up to 22 months ( longer than most college degrees!), each new calf is a cause for celebration. Since 2023, Pu’er has welcomed nine bouncing baby elephants, boosting China’s wild population to ~360.
Found mostly in Yunnan’s lush forests, Asian elephants are China’s national first-class protected species. Their comeback story? A win for conservationists and wildlife lovers alike.
