China Cuts Birth Defect Risks with Widespread Health Screenings 🌍👶

On World Population Day (July 11), China spotlighted its progress in reducing infant mortality through advanced healthcare measures. Over 90% of expectant parents now access pre-pregnancy and pregnancy screenings—a game-changer for early detection of birth defects, officials say. 🩺

Data from the National Health Commission (NHC) reveals a 30% drop in infant and under-5 mortality linked to birth defects since 2018. In 2023, rates fell to 4.5 and 6.2 per 1,000 births, respectively. \"Timely intervention can save lives,\" emphasized NHC official Shen Haiping, citing nationwide screenings for conditions like phenylketonuria. Specialized treatments, including subsidized medical formulas, now help children reach normal cognitive development. 🍼

Since 2014, a public fund has supported over 81,000 families affected by birth defects. By 2027, China aims to cut mortality rates further to below 1 per 1,000 infants and 1.1 per 1,000 children under five. Future plans include expanding access to rural areas and training more healthcare workers. 📉

\"Healthy childbearing is a priority,\" Shen added, underscoring China’s commitment to building what officials call \"a robust population foundation.\" 🌱
