China's National Meteorological Center sounded the alarm Friday with a blue alert – the lowest in China’s four-tier warning system – as intense rainstorms prepare to drench over a dozen regions this weekend.
From 2 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, parts of Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and nine other areas could see rainfall exceeding 70 millimeters per hour – that’s like a month’s worth of rain in some places falling in 60 minutes!
Authorities warn the downpours might bring:
Thunderstorms packing serious lightning
Gusts strong enough to flip umbrellas
Surprise hail attacks (yes, ice from the sky!)
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated via weather apps and avoid mountain trails or flooded streets. \"When the sky turns that weird green-gray color, it’s time to head indoors,\" says veteran meteorologist Zhang Wei.
