Costa Rica Faces Worst Drought in 50 Years, Implements Power Rationing 🌧️💡

Costa Rica, a country known for its lush rainforests and eco-friendly reputation, is battling its worst drought in half a century, triggering an unprecedented electricity crisis. ⚠️ The government announced power rationing starting Monday, with daily outages lasting up to three hours for households. Hospitals, factories, and high-energy users will be spared—for now.

💧 Why the blackouts? Over 70% of Costa Rica’s electricity comes from hydroelectric plants, but reservoirs are at 'critical' lows due to El Niño’s relentless dry spell. 'This is the most severe El Niño we’ve recorded,' said Roberto Quiros, electricity director of state-run ICE. Delays in private energy projects and unpredictable wind patterns have worsened the crunch.

🌪️ A regional problem: Costa Rica isn’t alone. Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador have also faced recent blackouts linked to extreme weather. President Rodrigo Chaves admitted he’s 'praying for rain' while struggling to buy energy from neighbors facing similar shortages.

📈 Rising demand: January’s electricity use spiked 9% compared to 2023, adding pressure. ICE urges residents to cut consumption, but with rainy season not due until late April, the tropical paradise faces a rocky road ahead. Will green energy adaptations keep up with climate chaos? 🌍🔌
