Railways Packed as Holiday Travel Surges

China’s railways hit an all-time high of 20.69 million passenger trips on May 1, the start of this year’s five-day May Day holiday! 🎉 According to the China State Railway Group, the numbers reflect pent-up demand for travel post-pandemic and a booming domestic tourism scene.

Airports Brace for Crowds

Beijing Capital International Airport expects over 918,000 passenger trips during the holiday, a 21% jump from last year. 📈 ‘We’re heading to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to photograph its stunning landscapes,’ one traveler told CGTN, lugging camera gear at the airport.

Global Hotspots Shine

Popular destinations include Chengdu, Shanghai, Sanya, and Hong Kong, plus international favorites like Tokyo and Seoul. ✈️ ‘May 5 will see a return peak with 207,000 trips and 1,200 flights,’ said airport official Cui Yali. Meanwhile, transport authorities predict 270 million total trips nationwide—outpacing both 2023 and pre-COVID levels.
