Move over, Marvel—China’s animation scene is stealing the spotlight! Ne Zha 2, the fiery sequel to China’s record-breaking animated franchise, has raked in over 13 billion yuan ($1.8 billion) at the box office as of February 21, cementing its status as a cultural juggernaut.
Sherwood Xue, CEO of Black Flame Interactive (the studio behind the phenomenon), sat down with CGTN to spill the tea on what makes Chinese animation pop. ‘Our stories dig deep into China’s rich mythology but speak a universal language,’ he said, highlighting the blend of high-tech CGI and timeless themes that’s winning over global audiences.
Xue also dropped gems for aspiring animators: ‘Forget chasing trends—focus on emotional truth. That’s how you create worlds that resonate across borders.’
With streaming platforms hungry for fresh content, could this be China’s ‘animation diplomacy’ moment?
