Sea Goddess Mazu Brings Cross-Straits Communities Closer

🌊🙏✨ The revered sea goddess Mazu is playing a pivotal role in uniting communities across the Straits this week! As part of the 16th Straits Forum, the Mazu cultural activity week kicked off on Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southeast China.

Themed \"Chinese affection for Mazu and both sides of the Taiwan Straits being one family,\" the week-long celebrations focus on youth interaction, grassroots exchanges, and economic and trade integration. These activities aim to strengthen kinship and promote well-being for people on both sides of the Straits.

Mazu, known as Lin Mo, a young woman from the 10th century, is celebrated for her selfless dedication in helping those in need. Her legacy continues as sailors and fishermen honor her for safe voyages and bountiful catches. The belief in Mazu is a cherished tradition shared by communities on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

This cultural week highlights significant exchanges, including the historic mutual visits of Mazu statues between the two sides, symbolizing peace and unity. In September 2023, a 10-day Mazu pilgrimage in Putian welcomed over 500 compatriots from Taiwan regions, continuing a tradition where more than 300,000 Taiwan compatriots visit Meizhou annually for pilgrimages and sightseeing.

\"Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits share the same roots and have an inextricable cultural and emotional connection. Mazu culture is an important bridge and link that maintains the emotions of people across the Straits, and is the witness and continuation of their bloodline affinity,\" said Wu Cheng-tien, chairman of Taiwan's New Party, at the opening ceremony.

Sun Dechong, executive vice president of the All-China Federation of Taiwan Enterprises, emphasized the unique role of Mazu belief in promoting cross-Straits integrated development and fostering spiritual bonds among people.
