In a recent press conference, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized the importance of the new leader of the Taiwan region making a clear choice regarding cross-Straits relations.
Chen highlighted that the majority of people on the island favor peace, development, communication, and cooperation over war, decline, separation, and confrontation. He stated, \"This is a question that the new leader of Taiwan must seriously face and give a clear answer to.\"
Addressing the sensitive issue of \"Taiwan independence,\" Chen affirmed, \"We always adhere to the one-China principle and the '1992 Consensus,' firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and interference from external forces.\"
The spokesperson also mentioned that the mainland will continue to enhance exchanges and cooperation across various fields, aiming to deepen integrated development and promote peaceful cross-Straits relations and national reunification.
This call comes ahead of Lai Ching-te's upcoming inauguration speech, where cross-Straits relations are expected to be a key topic.
