NY Philharmonic's Grand China Tour Unites Over 100 Musicians 🎻🌏
Over 100 talented orchestra musicians from New York, along with their instruments, stage crew, and support staff, have just wrapped up an epic multi-city tour across China, fostering a strong bond through their shared love for classical music.
The New York Philharmonic (NY Phil) 2024 tour to China made exciting stops in Guangzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai from June 27 to July 7. The tour wasn't just about performances; it also included educational activities through the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA), a collaborative effort between the NY Phil, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO), and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
While the NY Phil had visited Asia last year, featuring nine musicians in Shanghai, this year's tour marked their grand return to the Chinese mainland with a full orchestra—a momentous occasion as it’s the first time a full U.S. orchestra has performed there since the pandemic. This tour revives the spirit of international collaboration and cultural exchange that was paused in 2019.
Notably, in November last year, 14 musicians from another renowned U.S. ensemble, the Philadelphia Orchestra, journeyed to Beijing, Tianjin, Suzhou, and Shanghai for residencies and concerts, further enriching the cultural landscape.
