Boarding the Qinghai-Xizang Railway bullet train from Beijing, I embarked on my \"journey to the west,\" eager to be amazed by Xizang's stunning landscapes and its wonderful people. Sitting next to me was Numu, a middle-aged man engrossed in a thick book written in Tibetan. His quiet presence sparked my curiosity, and soon we struck up a conversation.
Numu shared his inspiring story of spending seven years in Tianjin as part of a government-sponsored education program in the 1980s. Initially struggling with the language barrier and homesickness, Numu's determination saw him transform from one of the lowest scorers to a top student. Today, as a freelance Tibetan-Mandarin translator, he serves as a \"bridge-builder,\" connecting Tibetan culture with the wider world. He beautifully described Xizang and other parts of China as \"different peaks of the same mountain,\" highlighting the close connections despite geographical distances. 🏔️🌐
Education: A Barometer of Social Progress
To truly experience Lhasa, I teamed up with a local guide who took me to iconic spots like Bakuo Street and the Potala Palace. I met Drolma, a bright freshman wearing traditional Tibetan robes, spending her summer holidays in suburban Lhasa. Drolma attends a local boarding school where she excels in her studies and speaks perfect Mandarin.
Drolma shared how the establishment of a nearby boarding school transformed her educational journey. Growing up in a remote village with limited access to schools, the local government's initiative allowed her and other children to receive quality education without the burden of long commutes. Her story is a testament to how education programs can uplift communities and foster cultural integration. 📚🌟
