In a significant move to bolster international relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade on Wednesday. The leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining the China-Serbia ironclad friendship and outlined plans to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Xi highlighted that the enduring friendship between China and Serbia is built on a profound historical heritage, a solid political foundation, and extensive common interests. He praised Serbia as China's first comprehensive strategic partner in Central and Eastern Europe, noting that their collaboration has significantly boosted both nations' development and revitalization.
The discussions focused on creating a China-Serbia community with a shared future in the new era. Both leaders agreed to expand Belt and Road cooperation and enhance partnerships with other Central and Eastern European countries. A key milestone in this partnership is the upcoming free trade agreement set to take effect on July 1, signaling a new phase of mutual openness between the two nations.
Xi announced China’s commitment to importing more quality agricultural products from Serbia and plans to invite 300 Serbian youths to study in China over the next three years. Additionally, China will support 50 young Serbian scientists through exchange programs, strengthening ties in artificial intelligence (AI) and other innovative fields.
The leaders also discussed the importance of opposing hegemony, power politics, and promoting international fairness and justice. Xi emphasized the need to uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter and practice true multilateralism.
On his part, Vucic expressed Serbia’s firm support for China’s legitimate positions on key issues and highlighted how Chinese investment has significantly advanced Serbia’s economic and social development. He welcomed more Chinese enterprises to invest in Serbia and looked forward to establishing additional direct flights to enhance economic and trade cooperation.
