After nearly a decade of hard work, the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, is officially complete and set to begin operations next year! 🎉

The observatory features a massive 44-meter-deep tank encased in a stainless steel mesh shell with a 41-meter diameter. Inside, a 35.4-meter organic glass ball houses 45,000 photomultiplier tubes, among other essential components. Just recently, the final photomultiplier tube modules were installed, marking a significant milestone in the project's completion.
JUNO's primary mission is to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, a crucial puzzle in particle physics. As neutrinos pass through the detector, a small fraction interacts with the liquid scintillator, producing light that the surrounding photomultiplier tubes can detect. This process will help scientists unravel the secrets of both the minuscule and the vast in our universe.
