Spring Festival Travel Boom: 23% Surge in Chinese Homecoming Trips

🌟 The Spring Festival, China's most cherished celebration centered around family reunions, witnessed an extraordinary surge in 2024! According to big data analysis from telecommunications giant China Mobile, the number of people returning home increased by a whopping 23% compared to last year.

🚄 Despite the impressive homecoming numbers, railway passengers saw a surprising drop of about 40% on February 9, the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Many travelers had already made their way home or embarked on their journeys earlier, with data from an official ticketing platform confirming this trend.

On February 8, the anticipation was high with 12.9 million people taking trains, and by February 9, over 170 million passengers had traveled during the Spring Festival travel rush, locally known as chunyun. This massive migration marks chunyun as the world's largest annual human movement.

🗺️ Starting from January 26, the 40-day travel period is set to break records with an estimated 9 billion cross-regional passenger trips, according to the Ministry of Transport. China Mobile's analysis predicts that the peak of this travel flow will occur on the fourth day of the Spring Festival.

The average distance traveled by individuals returning home during this festive period is 509 kilometers, showcasing the lengths people go to reunite with their loved ones. 🌍❤️✨
