The supplement Beni-koji Choleste Help – marketed as a cholesterol fighter – contained puberulic acid, a potent antibacterial compound from blue mold. While its exact health risks remain unclear, reports show over 1 million packages were sold since 2021.
Critics blast the company's delayed response: Kobayashi Pharma waited two months after first reports of kidney issues before initiating recalls. The scandal has now triggered nationwide recalls of products using their red yeast rice ingredient, including sake, miso, and snacks sold by 52 manufacturers.
Health Ministry officials told reporters: 'We're prioritizing transparency and swift action to protect consumers.' Meanwhile, nearly 700 people have sought medical advice, with fears rising about long-term impacts.
