The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is gearing up for an exciting expansion following the recent Astana Summit. With 9 member countries, 3 observer states, and 14 dialogue partners, the SCO encompasses Asia, Europe, and Africa, representing over 40% of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy.
At the heart of the SCO's mission is the Shanghai Spirit, emphasizing common development and economic revitalization. From its beginnings focused on security cooperation, the SCO has evolved into a multi-faceted organization addressing health, development, and cultural exchanges, making it a pivotal bridge of cooperation and friendship in the region.
Economic and trade initiatives have been a game-changer for SCO members. By 2021, the combined GDP of member states soared to approximately $23.3 trillion, with foreign trade volumes increasing nearly 100-fold over two decades. China's investment plays a significant role, exceeding $37.5 billion in mid-2022 alone.
China, a founding member, continues to lead with initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), enhancing trade and infrastructure. In 2023, China-Central Asia trade hit a historic high of nearly $90 billion, a 27.2% increase from the previous year. Key projects like the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway and the Central Asia–China Gas Pipeline are boosting connectivity and economic growth.
The SCO also promotes cultural exchanges and multi-level consultations, fostering deeper mutual understanding and cooperation among member states. As the organization looks to expand its reach, the future holds promising prospects for collective progress and development.
