China’s Commerce Ministry fired back on Monday against claims by a European Union (EU) official that the nation had shown reluctance in consulting on electric vehicle (EV) tariffs. The ministry labeled these remarks as “seriously inconsistent with the facts.” 🚫⚡️
The EU initiated an anti-subsidy probe into Chinese EVs in October 2023, prompting China to express strong opposition both bilaterally and multilaterally. In a statement responding to media inquiries quoting the EU’s ambassador to China, Jorge Toledo Albinana, a spokesperson highlighted ongoing bilateral exchanges through face-to-face meetings and official correspondence between top leaders and ministers over recent months.
“China has demonstrated its utmost sincerity,” the spokesperson emphasized, urging the European side to reciprocate by making joint efforts, pushing forward the consultation process, and reaching a mutually acceptable solution swiftly.
The spokesperson also stressed that trade protectionist measures are harmful to the growth of global green industries and collaboration in the automotive sector. China called on all nations to collaborate in promoting the green transformation of the economy. 🌱🚗
Furthermore, China firmly opposes any unilateral and protectionist practices that politicize or weaponize trade issues. The spokesperson warned that China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests in response to actions that abuse the rules and suppress the nation.
