China’s summer movie season is heating up faster than a popcorn machine! The 2024 box office has already surpassed 6 billion yuan ($841 million) as of Monday noon, with three homegrown films dominating the charts. Move over, Hollywood – this season is all about local storytelling!
Topping the list is the laugh-out-loud comedy “Successor” starring fan favorites Shen Teng and Ma Li. This tale of wealthy parents faking poverty to teach their son life lessons has earned 1.58 billion yuan since its July 16 release – that’s 26.4% of total summer earnings!
Coming in hot at #2 is the gritty crime thriller “A Place Called Silence”, which tackles the heavy issue of campus bullying. Since its July 3 debut, it’s racked up nearly 1.12 billion yuan, proving audiences love a good suspense fix.
Rounding out the top three is the heartwarming drama “Moments We Shared”, which has pulled in 496.5 million yuan since June. With the season running through August 31, there’s still time for these numbers to grow!
This year’s success comes hot on the heels of 2023’s 20.6-billion-yuan summer record, showing China’s cinema culture is thriving. From family comedies to social thrillers, these films reflect the diverse tastes of Chinese moviegoers – and the industry’s growing global influence.
