China and the European Union (EU) are racing to finalize a deal on electric vehicle (EV) pricing after months of tension over trade tariffs. A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson confirmed Thursday that negotiations are 'intensive' and focused on balancing the interests of both sides.
What's Happening?
The EU announced tariffs as high as 35.3% on Chinese EVs in October, claiming unfair subsidies. But both sides agreed to keep talking. A technical EU team even flew to Beijing earlier this month to hash out details. 'We’re working pragmatically,' said spokesperson He Yongqian, stressing that dialogue remains the priority.
WTO Appeal & Diplomatic Moves
China isn’t backing down completely. On November 4, it filed an appeal with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the EU’s tariffs. Still, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis vowed in late October to resolve the spat through price commitments. 'Both sides showed political will,' He added.
Why It Matters
With Chinese EV makers like BYD and Nio expanding globally, this deal could shape the future of green tech trade. For young professionals and entrepreneurs, it’s a key moment to watch: will cooperation win over competition? Stay tuned.
