China Tightens Rules on EU Medical Imports 🏥🇪🇺

China has rolled out new restrictions on European Union medical devices in government purchases, sparking fresh debate about global trade dynamics. 🇨🇳 The rules target high-budget procurement projects exceeding 45 million yuan ($6.29 million), blocking EU companies from participating unless they operate through China-based subsidiaries.

💡 Key details: EU-funded enterprises in China can still bid for contracts, but products imported directly from Europe must account for less than 50% of the total contract value. The policy excludes state-owned enterprise purchases, focusing solely on government-led acquisitions.

This move comes as a direct response to the EU's 2025 restrictions against Chinese medical suppliers. A Commerce Ministry spokesperson stated: "We had no choice but to act when faced with protectionist barriers" – highlighting escalating tensions in the US$7.3 trillion global medical device market.

🌐 Analysts suggest this could reshape supply chains, with companies like Siemens Healthineers and Philips potentially needing to boost local production in China. The rules take effect immediately, though existing contracts remain unaffected.
