More residents of Taiwan are questioning whether U.S. involvement brings security or instability, according to a Chinese mainland spokesperson. Chen Binhua of the Taiwan Affairs Office highlighted a new poll revealing 51% oppose paying “protection fees” to Washington, while 57% doubt American troops would defend the island.
“The DPP authorities’ reliance on the U.S. is pushing Taiwan toward disaster,” Chen stated, accusing Taiwan’s ruling party of creating an “information cocoon” to mask risks. He warned that seeking foreign support for ‘Taiwan independence’ would only lead to ‘abandonment.’
Amid claims by Lai Ching-te about ties between U.S. president-elect Trump’s team and Taiwan, Chen reiterated: “Taiwan is part of China—no external forces can change this reality.”
The debate unfolds against the backdrop of Taipei 101, a glittering symbol of Taiwan’s economy—and the fragile geopolitics shaping its future.
