The second phase of the 2024-25 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) regular season kicks off on Wednesday, featuring the Xinjiang Flying Tigers as they take on the Shenzhen Leopards.
Currently holding the league's second-best record in the first stage, Xinjiang is eager to boost their standings with the return of several key players.
Despite much of their championship-winning squad from 2017 having moved on, the Flying Tigers remain strong under the leadership of captain and current MVP Abdusalam Abdurexit. He emphasized the unique culture that defines the team:
\"I think club culture is key, especially considering our unique geographic location, and team composition,\" Abdusalam told CGTN Sports Scene's Damion Jones. \"We are the only CBA club representing the five northwest provinces and regions, and we have the most ethnic minority players in the entire league. This creates a distinct element for our team, and is a major reason for our special identity.\"
The Flying Tigers have long been known for their diverse roster, with ethnic minority players making up around 30 percent of the team, down from a peak of 40 percent. Club president Guo Jian highlighted that the spirit of Xinjiang basketball mirrors the resilient mindset of the regionโs people, encapsulated in the local phrase โLao Daoโ.
\"In Xinjiang, 'Lao Dao' is a sacred term that symbolizes courage, determination, positivity, and perseverance,\" Guo said. \"It embodies the spirit of the people of Xinjiang, and is a core value at our club. While the ultimate goal is the championship, the team focuses equally on building a fearless and determined squad with a tough, fighting spirit. This is the foundation of the club's culture. Rooted deeply in Xinjiang, the team believes its goals will be realized, leading the people and fans of Xinjiang to embrace and enjoy the journey of 'Lao Dao'.\"
From their humble beginnings to becoming a respected force in the CBA, the Flying Tigers continue to showcase not only their basketball prowess but also their relentless pursuit of success. Representing the pride of the Xinjiang region, they are writing new chapters in their story through effort, perseverance, and teamwork.
