A Chinese mainland spokesperson has slammed Lai Ching-te’s recent U.S. visit as an attempt to 'hijack Taiwan' into pursuing independence, calling it a dangerous game with global consequences.
Zhu Fenglian of the Taiwan Affairs Office accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities of \"colluding with external forces\" to destabilize cross-strait relations. She warned that such actions threaten peace in the Taiwan Strait and urged a return to the 1992 Consensus – the foundational agreement recognizing Taiwan as part of China.
\"The DPP’s separatist agenda is like trying to steer a sinking ship with fireworks,\" Zhu said at a briefing, emphasizing that foreign interactions with Taiwan undermine regional stability.
Analysts say tensions could impact tech supply chains and Asia-Pacific security, with over $1 trillion in annual trade flowing through the Taiwan Strait.
Zhu reiterated Beijing’s stance: No compromises on sovereignty, but open to dialogue if the one-China principle is upheld.
