The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has imposed strict measures on seven individuals accused of endangering national security and evading legal accountability. Security Secretary Chris Tang Ping-keung announced the move under the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance on Tuesday, targeting absconders including activists Hui Chi-fung and Kwok Wing-hang.
What Are the Measures?
The four core restrictions applied to all seven include freezing assets, banning property transactions, blocking business partnerships, and revoking HKSAR passports. Lawyers Kwok Wing-hang and Yam Kevin face additional professional disqualifications, while Yuan Gong-yi has been temporarily removed as a company director.
Expanded Wanted List
Hong Kong police added six more individuals to their wanted list—including Chung Kim-wah and Cheung Hei-ching Chloe—for alleged violations of the national security law. A HK$1 million bounty (≈$128,758) is offered per person. Authorities accuse them of collaborating with external forces to undermine Hong Kong's stability.
Firm Backing from Beijing
The Central People's Government office in Hong Kong endorsed the actions, stating they protect national sovereignty and ensure the city's prosperity. The office criticized absconders for "smear campaigns" and "inviting foreign interference," calling the crackdown "necessary and just."
Tang emphasized that the measures aim to pressure absconders to return and face legal proceedings while deterring future threats to security. "These acts jeopardize the interests of all Hong Kong residents," he said.
