In a strong statement on Wednesday, the Chinese mainland urged the United States to abandon its Cold War mentality and ideological bias by removing negative content related to China from the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025.
Xu Dong, spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), expressed China’s firm opposition to the NDAA, which he claims exaggerates the \"China threat,\" advocates military support for Taiwan, and suppresses China’s scientific, technological, and economic development.
He criticized the bill for restricting China-US economic, trade, and people-to-people exchanges, interfering in China’s internal affairs, and undermining China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Xu emphasized that the Chinese mainland has always managed its relations with the United States based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. He highlighted that the success of both nations presents opportunities for each other rather than becoming obstacles.
\"The steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-US relations is not only vital to our peoples but also to the future of humanity,\" Xu stated. He acknowledged that differences and disagreements between the two major countries are inevitable but should not undermine each other's core interests or lead to conflict and confrontation.
Addressing the red lines, Xu mentioned that issues such as the Taiwan question, democracy and human rights, China’s path and system, and China's development right are non-negotiable. He urged the United States to avoid repeating past mistakes concerning China's sovereignty and core interests.
Concluding his statement, Xu assured that the Chinese mainland will take resolute measures in accordance with the law to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and development interests if the negative articles in the NDAA are not removed.
