A Chinese mainland spokesperson has called on Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to stop hindering cross-strait tourism, stressing that cooperation could unlock cultural and economic benefits for both sides. ‘We want to see travel resume swiftly,’ said Chen Binhua of the Taiwan Affairs Office, responding to Shanghai’s proposal to restart group tours to Taiwan.
The DPP earlier flip-flopped on travel policies – lifting a mainland tour ban in March only to reinstate restrictions months later. Chen emphasized that such unpredictable moves hurt businesses and families. ‘Taiwan residents deserve smoother travel to reunite with loved ones,’ he added.
With winter holidays approaching, mainland airlines are prepping for increased cross-strait flights. ‘We’re committed to making travel easier for Taiwan compatriots,’ Chen noted, signaling optimism for warmer ties through people-first policies. Will the DPP respond?
