China is doubling down on food security with state-owned enterprises projected to buy 420 million tonnes of grain in 2024 – the second straight year above 400 million tonnes. This massive effort keeps pantry shelves stocked, supports farmers, and stabilizes prices nationwide.
Farmers First Policy
Officials at Thursday’s national conference highlighted smoother sales channels for farmers and a minimum purchase price guarantee to protect livelihoods. Autumn grain buying is now in full swing, especially for corn in northern regions, said National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration head Liu Huanxin.
Storage Meets Demand
China’s storage capacity has grown 36% since 2014, hitting 700 million tonnes by 2023. With this year’s record-breaking 706.5 million tonne harvest (up 1.6% from 2023), the country’s granaries are prepped to handle the influx while ensuring emergency reserves.
