In a significant move strengthening international ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced China’s support for Nigeria to play a larger role in both regional and global affairs.
Speaking with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Wang emphasized the strategic and long-term vision China holds for Sino-Nigerian relations. He highlighted Nigeria's pivotal role in Africa's quest for peace and development, recognizing the country as a major African nation with substantial global influence.
Wang reminisced about Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s successful visit to China last year, which elevated bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, opening doors for enhanced cooperation and mutual growth.
Under this partnership, China and Nigeria have witnessed remarkable cooperation results, bringing tangible benefits to their populations. Wang urged both nations to support each other’s core interests, aiming for mutual benefits and win-win outcomes in their development journeys.
China is committed to implementing the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and advancing the 10 partnership action plans in Nigeria. By aligning Belt and Road cooperation with Nigeria's Renewed Hope Agenda, China plans to deepen practical ties through infrastructure development, expanded trade, financial collaboration, and innovative investment ventures.
Additionally, Wang stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and personnel operating in Nigeria, ensuring a secure and cooperative business environment.
Appreciating Nigeria's support for China’s global initiatives, Wang highlighted joint efforts in advocating for climate justice at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. He affirmed China’s readiness to collaborate with Nigeria and other African nations on climate change to protect the interests of the Global South.
Echoing these sentiments, Foreign Minister Tuggar praised the deep historical ties between Nigeria and China, rooted in mutual respect and trust. He lauded China’s economic and technological achievements and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the one-China principle, ensuring continued support for China’s stance on the international stage.
Tuggar also expressed condolences over the earthquake in China's Xizang Autonomous Region, commending the swift and effective disaster relief efforts by the Chinese government.
As China and Nigeria continue to elevate their partnership, the future looks promising for enhanced cooperation and shared prosperity.
