At a recent UN Security Council meeting, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the need for international solidarity to help Syria achieve stability and development.
Fu highlighted that Syria is currently facing a critical stage with significant challenges ahead. He stressed the importance of a Syrian-led political process, aligning with Council Resolution 2254, and called for the international community to respect Syria’s right to determine its own future.
Although the national dialogue conference set for January 5 has been postponed, Fu expects all Syrian parties to prioritize the long-term interests of the country and initiate an open, inclusive political settlement.
Terrorism remains a top concern. Fu pointed out that the Syrian army has recently elevated foreign terrorist fighters, including leaders from the Turkistan Islamic Party, raising China’s alarm. He urged Syria to uphold its counter-terrorism responsibilities and prevent any threats from Syrian territory.
With over 16 million Syrians in dire humanitarian conditions and ongoing sanctions exacerbating their suffering, Fu called for increased international assistance. He urged the UN to spearhead humanitarian efforts, ensuring aid reaches those in need, especially as winter approaches.
Fu also addressed the status of the Golan Heights, reaffirming that it is internationally recognized as occupied Syrian territory. He reiterated China’s stance on respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
China continues its policy of friendship and cooperation with Syria, avoiding interference in its internal affairs. Fu concluded by expressing China’s readiness to collaborate with the international community to support Syria’s peaceful development and smooth transition.
