Tragedy struck Jinping Village in Junlian County, Yibin City, within the Chinese mainland's Sichuan Province on Saturday morning when a massive landslide ravaged the area around 11:50 a.m. Beijing Time.
As of Sunday morning, local authorities confirmed that one person has been found dead, two injured, and 28 remain missing. Rescue teams are tirelessly working to locate the missing, but the situation remains critical as the landslide has yet to stabilize.
Preliminary assessments reveal that continuous rainfall, coupled with geological conditions, transformed the landslide into debris flows extending approximately 1.2 kilometers with a staggering volume of over 100,000 cubic meters.
In response to the disaster, more than 200 residents have been evacuated to safety. A makeshift shelter has been set up in a local school, providing a temporary refuge for those displaced. Additionally, an emergency dining spot is now operational to ensure that everyone has access to essential meals.
To support the affected community, authorities have distributed thirty emergency generators, 100 cotton tents, 400 disaster relief beds, and 1,100 quilts. These supplies are crucial in meeting the basic living needs of the displaced individuals during this challenging time.
The resilience and solidarity of the community shine through as rescue efforts continue amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the landslide.
