Mention ‘seagrass,’ and most people picture murky ocean floors — but these underwater meadows are climate change superheroes! Celebrated every March 1, World Seagrass Day spotlights these vital plants that store carbon 35x faster than rainforests.
The UN declared the day in 2022, urging global action as rising temperatures and pollution threaten their survival.
Why care? Seagrass makes up 0.1% of the ocean floor but absorbs 10% of its carbon annually. They also shelter baby fish, filter pollutants, and prevent coastal erosion. But 7% of seagrass vanishes yearly — equal to two football fields every hour!
Activists are racing to restore these ‘blue forests’ using drones and community efforts. “Seagrass is the Swiss Army knife of ecosystems,” says marine biologist Dr. Li Wei. “Losing it means losing a lifeline.”
Want to help? Reduce plastic use, support beach cleanups, or donate to coastal projects. Let’s keep our oceans thriving — one blade at a time!
