Is China Still a Developing Nation? Experts Debate 🔍🌏

In a fiery CGTN debate, experts clashed over whether China’s economic muscle disqualifies it from the ‘Global South’—a term often linked to developing nations. Spoiler: It’s complicated. 💥

Liu Zhiqin, a senior fellow at Renmin University, argued that regional disparities prove China’s developing status. ‘First-tier cities like Shanghai might dazzle ✨, but visit the west or southwest—you’ll see gaps in infrastructure and wealth,’ he said.

Liu also emphasized shared history with other Global South nations, recalling struggles against colonialism. ‘GDP alone doesn’t define us,’ he added.

Meanwhile, Li Cheng of the University of Hong Kong countered: ‘China’s the world’s second-largest economy—its per capita GDP keeps rising. Nobody sees China as “very poor” anymore.’ Still, he urged empathy between nations: ‘North or South, we need to listen 🌍.’
