From Pro Courts to Coaching Stardom
Former Malaysian squash phenom Ong Beng Hee, once ranked world No. 7 and a double Asian Games gold medalist , is now shaping China’s rising stars. After retiring in 2015, he traded his racket for a coach’s clipboard, working in Malaysia, the U.S., and now Beijing.
Why China?
Ong told CGTN Sports Scene he was drawn by China’s rapidly growing interest in squash. Having coached Team USA for three years, he’s now laser-focused on developing talent for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where squash will debut. ‘My Olympic dream lives through my players,’ he said.
Squash Boom Inspiration
Drawing parallels to Malaysia’s post-1998 Commonwealth Games surge, Ong highlighted China’s potential with ‘both public and private investments’ fueling the sport. Will this strategy serve up future Olympic champions? Stay tuned!
