Northern China is literally cooking right now. A brutal heatwave has turned sidewalks into frying pans, with ground temperatures soaring past 70°C (158°F) in multiple regions this week.
In Shanxi Province, Yongji City recorded a scorching 71.5°C ground temperature on May 20 – hotter than most oven settings and just shy of its all-time high. Nearby Pingyao City hit 70.3°C, while Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region’s Tongxin Railway Station baked at 70.1°C.
This isn’t just 'summer vibes' – these temps are rewriting local weather records. Scientists warn such extremes could become more frequent due to climate shifts. For now, residents are advised to avoid midday outdoor activities (unless you’re trying to fry an egg on concrete ).
