🌏✨ Nishan Forum 2024: Celebrating Diversity & Global Harmony

In a world grappling with polarization, the 11th Nishan Forum on World Civilization is lighting the way for cross-cultural dialogue. Held in Qufu, Shandong—the birthplace of Confucius—this year’s theme, “Beauty in Diversity: Nurturing Understanding Among Civilizations for Global Modernization,” couldn’t be timelier. 🌸

Why Nishan Matters

Named after Nishan Mountain, where Confucius’ parents prayed before his birth, the forum bridges ancient wisdom and modern challenges. “Conflict is the antithesis of humanitarian will,” says Xiang Shuchen, a philosophy professor at Xidian University, quoting Martinique thinker Amy Césaire. The goal? To find shared values amid geopolitical fractures.

Confucius’ Legacy in Modern Dialogue

Edwin Etieyibo, a South African philosopher, highlights Confucianism’s emphasis on harmony: “Africans battling 28 state-based conflicts could learn from this.” He draws parallels with Africa’s Ubuntu philosophy, which champions humanity and togetherness. 🕊️

Africa & China: Shared Values for Peace

Both cultures prioritize family—not just nuclear, but extended. “In many African languages, there’s no word for ‘stranger,’” Etieyibo notes. This kinship mindset, he argues, could reshape global institutions and conflict resolution.

Diversity as a Superpower 🌈

The forum rejects the idea of a “mono-civilization.” As Xiang puts it: “When we walk with others, we learn from their strengths and correct our flaws.” Sound familiar? It’s straight from Confucius’ playbook—and a blueprint for today’s divided world.
