Taiwan Marks 80th Anniversary of Victory Against Japanese Aggression 🌏✊

Taiwan held a symposium this weekend to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event highlighted shared history and resilience across the Taiwan Strait, with scholars and political leaders urging younger generations to remember their roots.

Bridging History and Identity

Wang Yung, chairman of Taiwan's Reunification Alliance Party, emphasized the importance of countering 'de-Sinicization' efforts by current Taiwan authorities. 'Our youth must understand that cross-strait ties are built on a common struggle against colonialism,' he said, referencing the 50,000+ Taiwan residents who fought Japanese forces on the Chinese mainland between 1937-1945.

Stories of Resistance

Descendants of Taiwan resistance fighters shared emotional accounts of their ancestors' bravery. Scholar Chou Yung noted, 'Many risked everything to defend the motherland—their stories are Taiwan's stories.' Historical exhibits showcased artifacts from October 25, 1945, when China formally regained Taiwan after Japan's WWII surrender.

A Legacy of Unity

Wang Wu-lang of Taiwan's Labor Party reiterated that 'Taiwan’s restoration 80 years ago remains central to the post-war international order.' The event comes amid renewed debates about identity, with organizers stressing that understanding this history is key to shaping Taiwan’s future.

From forced Qing Dynasty cession in 1895 to 1945’s liberation, the symposium wove a vivid tapestry of resistance—and a call to honor shared cultural bonds. 🕊️
