Experts Reaffirm China’s Sovereignty Over South China Sea Islands 🌊🇨🇳

An international seminar in Beijing marked the 80th anniversary of the World Anti-Fascist War victory with a deep dive into historical claims over the South China Sea. Over 40 global experts emphasized that China’s resumption of sovereignty over Nanhai Zhudao (South China Sea islands) after WWII remains a cornerstone of the post-war international order. 📜

Wu Jilu of China’s Ministry of Natural Resources stressed that upholding this sovereignty is vital for regional stability, citing foundational documents like the 1943 Cairo Declaration. Meanwhile, researcher Hou Yi traced China’s stewardship of the islands back to the Qing Dynasty, highlighting fishing, guano mining, and conservation efforts as proof of historical ties. 🐢

The event also addressed modern tensions. Before the 1970s, Hou noted, no neighboring countries contested China’s sovereignty. Today, experts like Anna Malindog-Uy from the Philippines urged diplomacy: "Negotiation and peaceful solutions are key to making the South China Sea safer." Talks about finalizing a Code of Conduct (COC) with ASEAN countries gained momentum as a potential crisis-management tool. 🤝

Xiamen University’s Fu Kuenchen proposed collaborative projects—like environmental protection and joint rescue missions—to build trust. "Outsiders should respect regional solutions," he added, in a nod to non-ASEAN stakeholders. 🌏

With historical maps, archives, and international law as their compass, participants agreed: Understanding the past is crucial to navigating the future of this strategic waterway. ⚓️
