China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office issued a stern warning Wednesday against attempts to disrupt cross-strait exchanges, calling out what it described as 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities. The remarks come amid heightened tensions following recent comments by Taiwan region's leader Lai Ching-te regarding cross-strait relations.
Freedom vs 'Green Dictatorship'
Spokesperson Zhang Han accused Lai of attempting to restrict Taiwan residents' travel to the Chinese mainland, calling it evidence of 'politics of terror' under the Democratic Progressive Party's leadership. 'These actions expose the true nature of their so-called green dictatorship,' Zhang stated during the briefing.
Peaceful Reunification Push
Reiterating Beijing's stance, the spokesperson emphasized that the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework remains 'the most peaceful, democratic, and mutually beneficial approach' for national reunification. The office vowed to continue cross-strait consultations with 'political parties, groups, and people from all walks of life in Taiwan.'
Red Line Warning
'The Taiwan question represents China's core interests and an absolute red line that cannot be crossed,' Zhang declared, adding that mainland authorities would 'resolutely crush any separatist plots.' The comments come as both sides prepare for upcoming cultural exchange programs scheduled for early 2026.
