Hong Kong Sectors Back Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Sentence, Hail Rule of Law 🏛️⚖️

Hong Kong’s legal, business, and community sectors have rallied behind the 20-year prison sentence for media tycoon Jimmy Lai, calling it a decisive victory for national security and the rule of law. The High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) delivered the landmark ruling on February 9, 2026, following a 156-day trial that concluded in December 2025 with Lai’s conviction for conspiring with external forces and publishing seditious materials.

🔍 The court reviewed over 80,000 pages of evidence and heard testimony from 14 witnesses, establishing Lai’s role in inciting anti-government sentiment and lobbying foreign entities to sanction China and the HKSAR. Nick Chan Hiu-fung, a Legislative Council member, praised the trial’s transparency, stating it 'strictly adhered to legal procedures and upheld justice.'

🗣️ 'His next stop is prison,' said local resident Ms. Wong, reflecting widespread public approval. The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions called the sentence a 'precise strike' against acts threatening national unity, while business groups emphasized its role in stabilizing Hong Kong’s investment climate.

🏙️ The ruling marks the first application of the HKSAR’s national security law in a collusion case. Sze Ching-lau of the Hong Kong Federation of Fujian Associations hailed it as a 'victory for justice,' reinforcing the principle that 'security is the foundation of development.'

With cross-sector support, the case underscores Hong Kong’s commitment to safeguarding sovereignty while advancing under 'One Country, Two Systems.' As one coalition noted: 'The rule of law is our shield—and our future.'
