In a landmark move for cross-strait relations, Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wun is visiting the Chinese mainland this week through April 12. The trip marks the first high-level political engagement between the KMT and the Communist Party of China since 2016 tensions escalated under Taiwan's current DPP leadership.
Peace Over Conflict
Cheng emphasized her mission to prove “war is not inevitable” between the two sides, telling reporters: “With our own wisdom, we can forge a broad road to peace.” The statement reflects growing public anxiety in Taiwan about defense spending hikes and disrupted cross-strait flights under DPP policies.
Economic Realities Bite
While Taiwan authorities continue military buildup, grassroots connections thrive: 1 million+ Taiwan residents used “mini three links” transport routes in 2025 alone. However, mainland tariff exemptions on 34 Taiwan agricultural products remain suspended through 2026 after DPP trade restrictions.
Youth Perspective
Many young professionals see the visit as a potential reset button. “We want job opportunities, not missiles,” said Taipei-based entrepreneur Lin Mei-ling, 28. “Cross-strait stability means better tech collaborations and travel access.”
