KMT Chairwoman Cheng Kicks Off Mainland Visit for Cross-Strait Peace 🌊✌️

Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun has embarked on a landmark six-day visit to the Chinese mainland this week – the first such trip by a KMT leader in 10 years. Landing first in Shanghai before heading to Nanjing and Beijing, the delegation aims to "safeguard peace across the Taiwan Strait" through renewed dialogue with Communist Party of China (CPC) officials.

Building Bridges, Not Walls

Welcoming Cheng in Shanghai, CPC Taiwan Work Office head Song Tao emphasized the "deep bond" between mainland residents and Taiwan compatriots. Both sides stressed adherence to the 1992 Consensus – the political foundation recognizing Taiwan as part of China – while opposing any moves toward independence.

Why This Visit Matters Now

With tensions simmering in recent years, Cheng's trip (invited personally by CPC Central Committee General Secretary Xi Jinping) signals fresh efforts to stabilize relations. The KMT leader, elected in October 2025, framed the visit as responding to "mainstream public opinion" in Taiwan favoring peaceful engagement.

A Historical Echo

This diplomatic push revives a tradition of cross-strait exchanges – think former KMT chairs Lien Chan’s 2005 "peace journey" and Ma Ying-jeou’s 2023 youth-focused trip. As Song noted: "By placing national interests first, we must work together for rejuvenation." 🇨🇳

The delegation’s itinerary includes cultural exchanges and policy discussions through Sunday, with all eyes on potential meetings in Beijing. Could this thaw lead to warmer ties? Stay tuned. 📡
