While the world marked the first-ever UN-designated International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations on June 10, a cozy cultural exchange unfolded in Iowa—courtesy of Sarah Lande, a longtime friend of China known for fostering U.S.-China ties since the 1980s.
Lande hosted a vibrant Dragon Boat Festival gathering at her home, welcoming representatives from China Media Group (CMG) and the Chinese Consulate-General in Chicago. Friends from both countries bonded over zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and shared stories about the 2,000-year-old festival’s traditions, from dragon boat races to honoring poet Qu Yuan.
CMG President Shen Haixiong praised Lande in a letter, calling the festival a 'window into Chinese culture' and highlighting CMG’s commitment to deepening cross-cultural understanding. 'Every dumpling wrapped and story shared is a step toward friendship,' said one attendee.
The event also spotlighted Iowa’s unique role in U.S.-China diplomacy—Lande famously hosted Xi Jinping during his 1985 visit as a young official. 'Cultural diplomacy isn’t just about governments; it’s about people connecting through food, traditions, and laughter,' Lande remarked.
